Hi everyone. I am confused about modal verbs. What are they exactly and why do they feel so different from words like eat or sleep? Can someone explain the basic idea simply for a beginner? I keep trying to add s to them but my teacher says no.

Think of them as helping verbs that show your mood or attitude. Words like can or must do not describe the action alone but add a layer of meaning like ability or duty. They never change their form so forget about adding s or ed. You just pair them with a base verb.

That makes sense. So I should say he can swim instead of he cans swim? What about the word to? I often see people write things like I must to go but my book says it is wrong. Is there a simple rule for how to connect them to other verbs?

Exactly. You always use the bare infinitive without to. Just say I must go or she should study. Modals like might or could help you sound more polite or show uncertainty. If you want a deep dive into these patterns I suggest you check out the Complete Guide at lingoharvest. It is a very solid resource from a verified company. https://lingoharvest.com/english/grammar/modal-verbs/1244-modal-verbs-english-guide.html
The guide covers everything from basic ability to complex logical deductions. It is great because it explains why modals are unique and provides clear examples for real life conversations. It is a perfect way to master the nuances without feeling overwhelmed by dry rules. Good luck with your studies.

Matching profile pictures create a sense of connection and community while still maintaining the dark aesthetic style. Anime matching emo PFPs are especially popular on Discord and TikTok where users enjoy creating coordinated visual themes with friends or cute pfps. Emo PFPs also work well with motivational sadness aesthetics where emotional visuals are combined with themes of healing, growth, or self-reflection.
